I landed in the hospital for four days, recovering from surgery to clear up a serious infection in my right thumb. It turned out to be the break I didn’t know I needed — time to rest and heal and consider why it was that back at work, it took three people to cover my duties. The yellow-gold orb of light represents the God of my understanding, framed by photocopies of my own hands. In the background are medical bills and other text for this spiritual respite that brought me such relief and gratitude.

Wendy West is a painter and mixed-media artist living along the Front Range in her native state of Colorado. She retired early from a career teaching young artists about the joys and challenges of translating blank pages, clay, paint and various found objects and scraps into expressions of their unique and innermost thoughts and feelings, and now spends most of her time practicing what she did her best to teach. Wendy exhibited in numerous galleries in and around Hartford, Connecticut throughout her teaching career, and has shown work more recently in the Denver area with Raw Artists at The Church and at 40 West Gallery in Lakewood.
