The rough/smooth gravel texture, overlaid with footprints, paw prints, and bike tracks, leads the eye gently forward, always forward. Add the cool blue, shifting, soft-edged shadows of cottonwoods, grasses and the occasional signage, and even the ground at my feet is a visual delight on my daily treks along the trail. This is an abstract painting of a real subject, but it also draws on Impressionist tradition of using small strokes and dabs of color to create the effect of light and shadow on the canvas.

Wendy West is a painter and mixed-media artist living along the Front Range in her native state of Colorado. She retired early from a career teaching young artists about the joys and challenges of translating blank pages, clay, paint and various found objects and scraps into expressions of their unique and innermost thoughts and feelings, and now spends most of her time practicing what she did her best to teach. Wendy exhibited in numerous galleries in and around Hartford, Connecticut throughout her teaching career, and has shown work more recently in the Denver area with Raw Artists at The Church and at 40 West Gallery in Lakewood.
